Keep their best interests in mind

First and foremost, it’s essential to keep the best interests of the pet in mind, ensuring their health, happiness and overall welfare is looked after. If you’re moving into a small apartment while your ex is moving into a large house with a spacious backyard, you have to consider what’s best for the animal – even if that means giving up custody yourself.

Don’t be mean

During the process of determining who should take a pet, it’s important to be polite and compassionate. Though you may feel like you have a stronger bond with the animal, your ex may also have developed strong feelings, and it’s important to be mindful of these.

Consider joint custody

If both you and your ex can’t bear to part ways with your furry friend, one idea is to consider joint custody. Under this arrangement, the animal is shared between two parties in shifts, allowing equal access.

If you still can’t come to an agreement regarding who gets the pets, it’s recommended to get help from an experienced family lawyer such as Glenn Duker. Contact our firm today to discover how we can help.
